      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s class we started our work on A Wrinkle in Time learning about science fiction, the author’s life and Einstein! We began by discussing how we felt about the story before working through the scientific ideas in the story such as time travel. We watched a video on whether it was possible and then discussed how this connected to the plot overall. Finally we learned about the author and her approach to writing and the students came up with some amazing ideas for science fiction plots. Excellent and energetic work everyone, you were all fantastic today. Keep up the brilliant work and see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s class we began our study of War of the Worlds, thinking about the history behind the book. We discussed what we enjoyed and didn’t enjoy about the novel before thinking through the ways in which we can see the anxieties of the 1800s reflected in the plot. We spoke about the famous radio play drama of the 1930s, thought about the impact of Darwinism and Empire on the story and finally the class researched Wells to see what his life can reveal about the novel overall. Well done everyone, fab ideas today particularly when thinking about what science fiction as a genre reveals to us about our relationship to science & the unknown. Keep it up and see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s lesson we began our work on English comprehension. Today we focused on developing an overview of the most important skills for comprehension, thinking about the skillset involved with literary analysis, the four central question types (simple evidence, P.E.E., in your own words, meaning of words and phrases) and the ways in which the students should train their brain to think for the 11+ exams or similar comprehension tests. We worked with the paper assigned to today’s lesson, focusing on the questions the students found the most difficult and working out how to analyse and understand the papers themselves, learning techniques to help us unpick quotes and dig into the core meaning. Fab work today everyone- you were all super engaged and worked very hard, coming up with some fantastic ideas for important quotations and why you enjoyed them. Well done and I’ll see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s class we began our work on narrative writing, using adventure as a framework to help us think about why stories matter. We began with a big class discussion about why we as humans tell stories, thinking about how they can entertain, teach us things or help to solve the big questions of life. We looked at what narrative means and how we see it in the structure of story mountain and then spoke about the genre of adventure. The class looked at an adventure masterclass featuring lots of great tips such as creating risk for the characters and placing them in unusual environments. Finally we read an extract from Treasure Island introducing one of the characters and used this to create character descriptions of our own. The class made up some incredible adventure characters, describing them with beautiful detail and including some really exciting and compelling twists and turns. Very well done today everyone, it was a pleasure to see you all and hear your fun, creative and fascinating ideas. See you next week 🙂
